There are many diverse approaches to modern technique. At SDA, the techniques of Martha Graham, Lester Horto, and Jose Limon are used. Modern dance was derived from the basics of ballet, but shed what was considered a 'rigid' and 'controlling' technique. Modern is danced barefoot and uses floorwork, gravity, and angles, contracting and expanding, and catching and releasing in a way that ballet does not.
Leotard or tight fitting top, leggings or shorts. Student must be barefoot. Shirts should not show off bellies and no short shorts ('booty shorts') without leggings underneath.
