nina leahy-schlecht, instructor

My name is Nina, I am 16 years old and I have been dancing at Sherwood Dance Academy since 2012. I live in Newberg and I go to Newberg High School. SDA has been a huge part of my life, it is like my second home. I am apart of Senior Showstoppers and Acro Showstoppers. I have taken other classes in the past such as Tap and Hip Hop, although I have proven to not be naturally skilled in the Hip Hop department.

She teaches: Acro, Jazz

Get to know Nina better:

When did you start dancing and why did you keep dancing?  I took my first dance class when I was 10 years old here at SDA. My friend Taylor brought me to bring a friend week and I fell in love. I begged my mom to sign me up that night. Until then, I had never found any sport that I connected with. I was so happy to be apart of a team and to have found something that I was passionate about.

Why did you want to become a dance instructor?  I have always loved working with kids. When I started assisting classes in 2016, I realized that becoming an instructor was something I really wanted to do in the future.

Do you still dance or take dance lessons even though you are an instructor?  Yes! I am in Acro and Senior Showstoppers. I also take additional technique classes. I love taking class in styles that I am not particularly good at. It’s always fun to push yourself out of your comfort zone and learn new things.

What is your favorite style of dance and why?  Throughout the years, I have taken almost every style of dance that SDA offers. My favorite style however is Jazz. Jazz comes the most naturally to me.

What is the hardest part about dance to you and why?  The hardest part about dance is to continue improvement. Sometimes it feels like you’ll never get any better, but you can always improve and get better.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of the studio or besides teaching dance?  My favorite thing to do outside of dance is hang out with the girls in my classes. We are all very close and treat each other like family.

What is your favorite dance quote and why?  “Dance is a way to find yourself and lose yourself...All at the same time.” -Unknown. This is my favorite dance quote because it expresses how I feel about dance.

Other tidbits:  I am very excited to be a Junior Instructor now at Sherwood Dance Academy, and to be working with kids doing the thing I love.
